For HMAX, instead of the Serre et al report, I've found that the following paper is a much easier read (Mutch & Lowe, IJCV 2008):  http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11263-007-0118-0 For the core of the model, it's really just 3 pages (see esp. Fig 2 and Section 2).
